How do you selfcare? I’ve been asked this question many times. How do I deal with emotional turmoil, stress, negative energies that others may try to project, a rough season etc. So i realized i needed to share my self care tid bits and journey when I have crappy days what are some of the things that help me get through! For my grandmothers sitting around the fire and telling stories whilst listening to their favorite female griots sing was just what they needed to heal and talk through their stresses, this notion of self care with community or in other facets is not too strange or far off for me. In fact I would argue that as much as people think self care is a western concept I could trace it's origins within my Sierra Leonean culture but in more subtle non explicit ways. So I decided to start a column that focuses on self care from my own perspective both culturally embedded as well as my educational background in social work and how it has impacted my perception on mental health. Peppersoup recipes will focus on my rituals for self-care through one of my favorite self care mediums being food! More specifically my love for Peppersoup. There is something so comforting about making a warm bowl of West African Peppersoup. Through each post I will share the ingridients in making various types of pepper soup along with my key selfceare message for that week.
